Fall Playdough Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup salt
  • 2 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 cup water
  • Food coloring (orange, red, yellow)

Optional add-ins:

  • A few drops of vanilla extract, cinnamon, clove, pumpkin for scent
  • Glitter (for a touch of autumn magic)

Instructions:

  1. Mix dry ingredients:
In a medium saucepan (off the heat), combine flour, salt, cream of tartar, and spices. Mix well to ensure the spices are evenly distributed.
  2. Add wet ingredients:
Stir in the water, oil, and food coloring. Mix until the dough is smooth and the color is even.
  3. Cook the dough:
Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir constantly. The mixture will start to thicken—keep stirring until it forms a dough ball and pulls away from the sides of the pan (about 3–5 minutes).
  4. Cool and knead:
Remove from heat and let it cool for a few minutes. Once it’s cool enough to handle, knead the dough on a clean surface until it’s soft and pliable.
  5. Store:
Store your fall playdough in an airtight container or zip-top bag. It should last for several weeks if kept sealed and away from moisture.

Fall-Themed Play Ideas:

  • Use cookie cutters to make leaf shapes or little acorns.
  • Add small twigs, buttons, and googly eyes for creative characters.
  • Pair with a nature walk: collect leaves, pinecones, or small stones for playdough stamping.
